Sleep Schedules

Author: Tina Thomssen

With the summer over and school beginning, sleep schedules for students change. Most can no longer stay awake for as long as they’d like and sleep in for the length of time that they please. Few keep a consistent schedule.

It can be difficult to drastically change the way you sleep in a short amount of time. Some kids change their plans in the span of three weeks and others choose one. Either way, you can’t get the perfect amount with a snap of your fingers. It takes time and it can depend on what someone does throughout the day and how tired they are.

Doctors say that a healthy amount of sleep for teenagers is 7-9 hours per night. Studies show this as well. They need enough sleep to function throughout the day and remain alert while in class. If students don’t get the sleep they need, they’ll be tired and their attention span could reflect that. If it’s a nightly occurrence, it might start to affect the student’s grades.

However, you can’t control everything a teenager does, it is ultimately their decision. Their phone can be taken away but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will fall asleep. It’s the student’s responsibility to get the amount of sleep that they need. Some days they may choose to get a surplus amount or less. On some nights they may not be able to fall asleep, but everyone has their days.

A good night’s rest is very important in people’s day-to-day lives. Make sure your child is getting the sleep they need. If you continue to have problems, you should consider seeing your doctor. Again, everyone has their bad days, but be sure that everybody is getting the hours they need for their brain to function.
